Mar 03 New Georgetown Location
We are excited to announce that we will be opening a second campus this fall in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. The impetus of MYSA Georgetown was a committed and passionate group of parents seeking to create a community school for their children. In exploring many options and potential models of education the parents decided that the MYSA micro-school model was the best way to educate their children. The parents and MYSA have partnered together to create a community school serving children in grades K-5. Our exact location is still to be determined, but once final enrollment has been decided we will secure our site (by the end of May). The possible locations are all within a few blocks of the Georgetown Public Library.
At MYSA Georgetown students will have learning plans uniquely tailored to each student’s interest and academic needs. We will use a mastery model whereby students’ progress through their academic plans at their own pace. Students will learn and interact in one mixed age classroom, working both independently and in groups throughout the day. The student-to-teacher ratio will be 10:1 and we will not have more than 50 students in the whole school.
The Georgetown campus will share a Head of School, Assistant Head of School, and Director of Teaching and Learning with the Bethesda campus. Teacher recruiting is beginning and should be completed by late spring. We will have core full-time teachers and part-time on or off-site PE, art/music, and foreign language teachers. Additionally, parents will be required to contribute volunteer time at MYSA school. During volunteer time, parents will have great flexibility to decide how to contribute. While volunteer time during school hours is preferred, accommodation can be made for parents whose schedules do not allow this.
